If Indiana has enough budget surplus at the end of the fiscal year, taxpayers will automatically get a refund.
In December 2021, the state had a $3.9 billion surplus.
Stimulus: Essential workers to see stimulus payments totaling $30 million
Who qualifies?
Any resident of Indiana that filed their 2020 taxes before January 3, 2022, will qualify. Approximately 4.3 million will receive the payment worth $125. That is about 85% of their adult population. Find more information on it here.
If you provided banking information on your tax return and filed your 2021 taxes before the deadline, you’ll get the money via direct deposit.
The refunds are starting this month and will continue through the summer. Residents that filed a paper return can expect a paper check in the mail in July or August. The hope is to have all refunds send by September 1.
If you’ve changed addresses recently, verify or register your address with Indiana’s tax portal. You don’t have to do anything, the check will just come to you. If you’re curious you can check the status of your refund on Indiana Department of Revenue’s website.
