The Senate passed legislation that will establish the “Restaurant Meals Program.” The program would allow homeless, disabled, and elderly residents of Missouri to pay with SNAP benefits.
The bill hardly passed. Many suggested that this could lead to unhealthy diets. However, many recipients can’t safely cook or store the food they buy.
The program is estimated to impact 183,000 households. It is expected to cost $27,000 the fist year. The cost is because it will require computer system upgrades. After that is expected to be $500 per month for maintenance.
The House has until May 13 to vote on the legislation.
