‘I feel it’s a good deal for taxpayers’: Hochul defends Bills stadium price tag

Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the state budget investments for Western New York on Monday at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo.

With the Democratic primary only two months away, Hochul faces her lowest approval rating since taking office and heavy criticism for putting $600 million in tax dollars towards the new Bills stadium.

“Wherever I go upstate, people are excited,” said Hochul on Monday, according to The Citizen. “People tend to like what’s in their area, not what’s outside their area. I feel it’s a good deal for the taxpayers,” referring to the state’s contribution to the Bills stadium.

The Siena College Research Institute recently released the results of a poll that found only 36% of New Yorkers think Hochul is doing an excellent or good job- a 13-point drop compared to last month- while 57% say she’s doing a fair or poor job. On specific job performance ratings, 69% gave Hochul a negative rating on crime and 63% gave her a negative rating on economic issues.

Hochul’s overall favorability rating is 44-34%, roughly 20 points ahead of both Democrat Jumaane Williams (24-20%) and Republican Lee Zeldin (22-19%).
