Gas card requirements
50,000 cards pre-loaded with $150 will be distributed throughout Chicago using a lottery system. If you want to apply, you can register starting April 27. Read more about it here.
In addition to the gas cards, 100,000 cards pre-loaded with $50 will be distributed for public transit.
Chicago is the first major city to implement a program like this. However there are eligibility requirements:
- be a resident of the city of Chicago
- at least 18 years old
- have a current and valid city sticker with correct mailing information
- have a household income at or below 140% of the Area Median Income
The national price for a gallon of gas is $4.225 according to AAA.
A lottery will determine who gets the card. The program was initially rejected but then approved on April 20.
