The Reimagining Public Safety Plan was examined by Ithaca’s Common Council at a special meeting on Monday, April 11.
The meeting- called a Committee of the Whole meeting- was held following the weekly Common Council meeting last Monday. No votes were taken, but discussion took place on whether Ithaca-area law enforcement should or should not be restructured in three distinct ways, according to Ithaca Voice.
Those changes include renaming the Ithaca Police Department as the Division of Police, bringing on five Community Solutions Workers as a Division of Community Safety, and bringing both proposed agencies under the Department of Community Safety headed by a civilian commissioners.
Last Monday’s special meeting did not appear to bring about a strong consensus on whether or not Ithaca law enforcement should be restructured. Acting Mayor Laura Lewis stated that if there are enough reforms to require a voter referendum in November, they would likely need to write a law by July.
