The Cornell Big Red men’s lacrosse team (10-2) had their four-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 17-10 loss to the Army West Point Black Knights (10-2) at Schoellkopf Field.
Army West Point controlled the game from the opening draw, scoring the game’s first seven goals and never letting Cornell in it. They led 9-3 at the break and 15-6 going into the fourth quarter. The Big Red did outscore the Black Nights 4-2 in the final quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
CJ Kirst netted a hat trick to lead Cornell. Billy Coyle and Alex Holmes each scored twice while Michael Long, Joe Wolf and John Piatelli also found the back of the net.
Ryan Sposito, Gunner Philipp, Bobby Abshire, Brendan Nichtern, Paul Johnson and Bo Waters each notched multi-goal games to lead the Black Knights. Will Coletti, Danny Kielbasa, Reese Burek and Jacob Morin also tallied to round out the scoring.
Chayse Ierlan and and Wyatt Knust combined for 11 saves in the loss while Wyatt Schupler made 12 saves in the win.
Army West Point held a 44-36 edge in shots, a 37-30 advantage in ground balls and enjoyed a 20-of-31 day in the face-off circle.
Cornell will try to bounce back next Saturday afternoon at home against Brown.
