Waterloo man causes two car crash fleeing deputies, faces larceny and assault charges

One person was taken into custody and another hospitalized after an alleged theft, search, and two-vehicle crash in Ontario County.

According to a news release, the Ontario County 911 Center received a call from a citizen that two males stole two televisions at the Geneva Walmart.

The citizen followed the suspect vehicle and lost sight of it on County Road 4 in the town of Seneca as it traveled west.

Approximately 15 minutes later, a deputy spotted the vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle- traveling west on Route 488 in Hopewell.

As the deputy tried to catch up to the vehicle to confirm whether it was the suspect- the vehicle fled.

The deputy did not initiate a pursuit.

The deputy continued in the direction where he last saw the vehicle and eventually reached North Road and County Road 28- discovering that the suspect vehicle was involved in a crash.

Investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as DeJohn Butler, 22, of Waterloo, approached the stop sign at the intersection, veered left, then traveled through the grass striking a vehicle that was making a left turn.

The suspect continued north into the parking lot of an office, striking a decorative brick pillar, knocking it to the ground.

A 19-year-old woman in the second vehicle was taken to the hospital by Canandaigua Ambulance for treatment of her injuries. Deputies said she had been released.

The driver and passenger in the suspect vehicle fled on foot and were apprehended nearby.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

According to the news release, Butler was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, assault, reckless driving, petit larceny, and other charges.

The 14-year-old was released to a parent with no charges.

New York State Police, Canandaigua Police, Canandaigua Fire, and Canandaigua Ambulance assisted.
