Federal disability benefits are the same nationwide.
However, many states supplement that payment.
IRS: Will tax brackets change in 2022?
How much is the payment?
The federal benefit changes every year based on the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Read more about it here.
In 2022, the federal SSI benefit is $841 for individuals and $1,261 for a couple. SSDI payments average about $1,358.30 a month.
Which states provide additional benefits?
SSI is available in all 50 states. Arizona, Mississippi, North Dakota, West Virginia and the Northern Mariana Islands are the only places that do not offer additional funds receiving SSI.
Benefits between states range from an additional $10 a month to several hundred additional dollars on top of the SSI benefit.
What happens to my benefits if I move states?
Moving states does not mean you have to reapply for SSDI or SSI benefits. However, you will need to inform the SSA. Even if you move within the state, you need to inform the SSA. Any changes in your personal financial situation that could impact your benefit should be reported.
You’ll have ten days after the end of the month to communicate your changes to the SSA. Failure to do so could result in a $25-$100 fine for each offense. The penalty will be taken out of your monthly benefit. You can update your information online or by calling 800-772-1213.
