Police: Person rescued from embankment in Penn Yan after suffering mental health crisis

Police in Penn Yan say they were called to a portion of Lake Street after receiving report of a person suffering from a mental health crisis on Lake Street.

Around 12:18 p.m. police responded to an area of Lake Street — and could not immediately find the person identified by callers. A short time later officers received a report that the person fled a residence on Brown Street, and may have been running through back yards toward Sunset Avenue.

Officers eventually spotted the person halfway down an embankment in Kimball’s Gulley. They made contact with the person and calmed them down.

A rope was thrown down to the person and officers pulled the person to safety.

Police say the person was suffering from a mental health crisis — and had allegedly used a methamphetamine. They were checked over and taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Penn Yan Police Department was assisted by Yates County Emergency Management, Penn Yan Ambulance, Medic 55, the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, Dundee Rope & Rescue, and the Penn Yan Fire Department.
