Mynderse Academy is dedicating its outdoor track facility to long-time coach Ron Fleury.
The dedication will take place on Tuesday, April 19th at 4:00 pm.
Coach Fleury was employed as a junior high mathematics instructor in the Seneca Falls Central School District in August 1969 until he retired in 2000.
He has coached the Varsity Track and Field teams since 1969, minus a few years in the late 70’s because of injuries suffered in an automobile accident and again in 2020 due to COVID and a successful battle with cancer.
Coach Fleury is a graduate of Port Byron High School (class of 1964) and SUNY at Cortland (class of 1968). He ran cross-country and spring track. In 1967, Cortland won the SUNYAC Cross-Country Championships for the first time in school history and repeated as conference champs in 1968. Coach Fleury was elected to the SUNYAC Cross-Country Hall of Fame in 1970. He was inducted into the Mynderse Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2021.
During Coach Fleury’s tenure at Mynderse Academy, the Blue Devils won the 2001 Section V Class CC Championship and garnered a handful of Finger Lakes League titles over the last five decades. In 2018, the Blue Devils took the League Championship again with a record of 21 and 1 in the final year of scoring meets. Mynderse won league titles in 1975, 1995 and 2003. In addition to numerous team honors including tournament and invitational championships over the past half-century, the Blue Devils have had a great tradition of individual and relay league and sectional champions. Since 2000, Mynderse has had at least one student-athlete advance through Sectionals to qualify for the NYSPHSAA Championships ten times.
Coach Fleury has also coached Cross Country at the former Eisenhower College for 12 years until the college closed in 1982. He then went to Hobart and William Smith Colleges to continue his distinguished career at the Division III collegiate level for 38 years. In 2009 HWS established the Ron Fleury Cross Country Award to honor Ron’s commitment to runners in their roles as student athletes and citizens. This award is presented annually to the “runner whose dedication to his academic work, his teammates and to HWS community has been outstanding during their career at HWS.”
