Sheriff Phil Povero says a 15-year-old male student brought a loaded handgun and an additional magazine of bullets to the Red Jacket High School in Shortsville.
It happened on Friday, and the student had gotten the attention of school staff. A conversation between the student and a staffer led to gun’s discovery.
The weapon was confiscated by a member of the school staff, who also detained the student- calming them down.
“The actions of the Red Jacket High School staff to calm and eventually disarm this student were truly heroic,” Povero said during a press conference. “I can’t emphasize enough, members of the Red Jacket school staff who dealt with this individual performed an act that was truly, again, of heroic nature.”
He said the actions of staff potentially averted a serious situation.
The call came in to the sheriff’s office around 10:20 a.m. The student was taken into custody. No charges had been filed as of the press conference, which was held at 4 p.m., but were pending.
