NYS DOL asks unemployment recipients to submit proof of pandemic benefits eligibility

The New York State Department of Labor (DOL) recently sent an email to thousands of New Yorkers asking them to prove they were entitled to unemployment benefits they received over a year ago.

The DOL is requiring people who received Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) after December 27, 2020 to provide documented proof they had been employed or self-employed prior to applying for benefits, according to News10 NBC. The DOL told News10 NBC they are conducting a cross-check as required by the federal government.

Those who fail to respond to the DOL’s request within 90 days could be forced to pay back the benefits they received. Everyone who is required to submit further documentation has been notified via email or USPS mail.
