The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Monday that they have suspended Toronto Maple Leafs star centerman Auston Matthews two games for cross-checking Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin during Sunday’s Heritage Classic.
The incident occurred late in the third period with Buffalo leading 4-2. Matthews shoved Dahlin in front of the Buffalo net. Dahlin shoved him back, sending Matthews to the ice. He got up immediately and delivered a cross-check to Dahlin’s neck. Matthews was assessed a minor penalty for cross-checking.
“It’s hockey,” Dahlin said after the game. “You know, things happen out there, it goes fast. It was intense. So, I’m fine. I’m just happy we won. I’m not too worried about that stuff.”
