New York State Police provided an update on a fatal snowmobile accident that happened in Lewis County on Friday.
According to a news release, the collision happened around 12:45 a.m. on Rector Road (Trail C5B) in the town of Montague.
They say a 2016 Polaris snowmobile, operated by Charles Eldred Jr., 44, of Canandaigua was traveling east and another snowmobile, operated by Nicholas Kyle, 64, of New Jersey was traveling west when they collided.
The two snowmobiles collided head on, and investigation suggests that Kyle failed to keep right at the crest of a small hill where the crash occurred.
The investigation remains active. However, troopers said both died from the crash.
State police were assisted by the Martinsburg Fire Department.
