There’s a growing trends of U.S. bars and restaurants boycotting Russia vodka in reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, prompting confusion over which brands are actually made in Russia.
Two popular vodka brands- Stoli (Stolichnaya) and Smirnoff- produce their vodka in Latvia and the U.S., respectively.
“Stoli® Group has had a long history of fighting oppression from the Russian regime. We unequivocally condemn the military action in Ukraine and stand in support of the Ukrainian people,” said Stoli Group in a statement, according to WETM.
The Smirnoff website details the company’s history, noting the brand was founded by Vladimir Smirnoff, who fled Russia during the Revolution.
“We’ve been in America since 1934 and are fully owned by Diageo, a British company,” stated Smirnoff on their website.
