The RPO presents Gershwin and music inspired by Latin America

Geneva Concerts brings the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra to Geneva’s Smith Opera House, 82 Seneca Street, on Friday, March 4th at 7:30 pm. The concert will feature the RPO and internationally acclaimed pianist Xiayin Wang playing Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F-major and the RPO performing three pieces inspired by the music and sounds of Latin America.

Xiayin Wang has performed throughout the world, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, South America, Europe and Asia. The New York Times praises her “estimable grasp of pianistic color and her ability to maintain and illuminate a strand of melody within the thickest of textures.” She has released numerous recordings described as ‘terrific’ and ‘the model of refinement.’

The RPO will be led by guest conductor François López-Ferrer, who has wide experience in Europe, the US and Latin America. He will be offering Alberto Ginastera’s Four Dances from Estancia, music inspired by rural Argentina, Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, reflecting the sounds and rhythms of Havana, and Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: an Andean Walkabout, which blends classical and Andean folk music traditions.

We are very pleased to be offering live concerts again, and we are also aware of the safety concerns that are involved. Masks are recommended but not required and there will be a section in the left rear of the theatre where social distance can be maintained; proof of vaccination will no longer be required.

Tickets for adults and seniors are $30, full-time college students $10, children through Grade 12 are free. Hobart and William Smith students with ID are free thanks to past generous support from the Colleges. Tickets are available online at www.GenevaConcerts.org, or at the door. This concert is supported by grants from the Williams Foundation.

Geneva Concerts has brought live music and dance to the community since the 1940s, especially encouraging young people to attend through the Sponsor-A-Student program and educational outreach programs brought to the schools.
