Waterloo man facing felony charges after threatening to shoot two people

A Waterloo man was taken into custody after he threatened to shoot two people in Seneca County.

Investigators arrested Laron Cheeks, 23, of Waterloo following a dispute where he threatened to shoot two local residents with a handgun.

According to deputies, they were called to the scene after a 911 call regarding a dispute. Upon arrival, Cheeks was immediately taken into custody- and attempted to conceal a handgun.

The handgun was ultimately recovered by law enforcement following the execution of a search warrant. Deputies said the handgun was defaced- with no serial numbers present.

Cheeks was charged with two counts of menacing, criminal possession of a fire arm, and criminal possession of a weapon. The latter charges are felonies, according to deputies.

He was released on his own recognizance after arraignment through New York State bail reform laws.

Cheeks is scheduled to answer the charges at a later date.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police and the Waterloo Police Department. North Seneca Ambulance also stood-by until the scene was declared safe.
