Applications will open soon for a new universal basic income program that could give residents an entire year of free money.
The applications are opening on Friday, Feb. 25 in West Hollywood.
25 people will be randomly selected and get $1,000 per month for 17 consecutive months.
There are no strings attached to the money.

Who can apply for the Universal Basic Income program?
In order to apply you must be a resident in West Hollywood and be 50 or older.
All residents can apply despite citizenship status.
One requirement is you need to identify as a member of the LGBTQIA.

This includes
- lesbian
- gay
- bisexual
- transgender
- queer
- intersex
- asexual
Income must be equal to or below 50% area median income in the metropolitan area for Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Glendale.
This means if your household is one person, the income must be at or below $41,400.
A household of four can’t make over $59,100.

The West Hollywood Pilot for Guaranteed Income universal basic income program
WHPGI sponsors the program.
This program’s goal is to provide older individuals that identify as LGBTQIA with more stability from the finances.
According the the organization, The Sun reports that 43% of the population in West Hollywood identifies as belonging to the LGBTQIA community.
44% live in poverty and are over age 55.
Payments for the UBI program
The application will be open from Feb. 25 through March 6.
Notifications will go out between March 14 and 31.
The first payment will go out April 15.
The payments will be disbursed with a debit card linked to a bank account.
You don’t need a bank account to receive the money.
