Buffalo was unable to convert on their lone power play opportunity. The penalty kill finished 2-for-2.
Dustin Tokarski made 31 saves for the Sabres. Darcy Kuemper made 29 saves for the Avalanche.
Nathan MacKinnon, J.T. Compher, Nazem Kadri, Alex Newhook and Mikko Rantanen scored for Colorado.
The Sabres look to snap their two-game skid on Sunday night when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets. Face-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
