Sheriff Schenck: Distracted drivers number one cause of serious accidents

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck recently commissioned a study of serious accidents in the county from 2016-2021.

The study looked at 2,244 injury accidents. 41 of them were fatal, with 47 people killed. Shenck says one factor emerged as the biggest cause of those crashes.

The other primary causes of injury accidents were speed and failure to yield the right of way. Schenck says he believes that issue is related to driver inattention.

A CDC study in 2018 found over 2,800 people were killed and over 400,000 injured in accidents involving a distracted driver.
