The Seneca Park Zoo Society received a philanthropic donation on Monday in the form of cryptocurrency, and they’re accepting more.
The donation on Monday, February 14 came from JPEG DAO, a distributed autonomous organization that produces and distributes non-fungible tokens (NFTs), to the tune of $5,000 worth of a cryptocurrency called Stellar Lumens (XML), according to Rochester First.
The Seneca Park Zoo Society says they will use donation to fund efforts to create a new nursery in Madagascar’s North Central region. The Society chose Stellar Lumens as their preferred cryptocurrency for donations because of it having the “lowest carbon emissions footprint among cryptocurrencies,” according to the zoo’s website.
Cryptocurrency mining has come under fire in recent years for its energy usage and potential environmental impact.
The Seneca Park Zoo Society is accepting Stellar Lumen and other proof-of-stake crypto donations through their website.
