Cayuga County-area officials want Owasco Lake added to state’s list of impaired water bodies

Cayuga County-area officials are calling for Owasco Lake to be added to New York’s list of impaired water bodies, which would require state to form pollution cleanup plan.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting public comments through Friday, February 11, concerning its latest proposed impaired waters list required under the federal Clean Water Act, according to The Citizen. Owasco Lake is not on the list, despite algal blooms in recent years.

The Auburn City Council and the Cayuga County Water Quality Management Agency have both passed resolutions calling for Owasco Lake to be put on the list to ensure a cleanup plan with federal oversight, called a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), can be developed and put into place.
