Millions of Americans received the 2021 stimulus check worth $1,400, but some missed out for various reasons.
In all there have been 3 economic impact payments since the start of the pandemic.
The checks were worth $1,200, $600, and $1,400 respectively.
The first two were in 2020 and the most recent was in March of 2021.
The IRS officially ended sending any stimulus checks on Dec. 31, 2021.
If you missed out, you’ll need to claim it on your tax return.
Stimulus checks and the Recovery Rebate Credit
The Recovery Rebate Credit was first introduced in 2021 for people to claim any stimulus payments from 2020.
The purpose is for those who may be entitled, but were missed for any reason, to claim the payment.
In order to claim this credit you’ll need to file a tax return even if you don’t normally file one.
Reasons you didn’t get the stimulus check
There are three reasons you may not have received a check, according to Marca.
- You had a baby you can’t claim until you file your 2021 tax return
- You obtained a new dependent you can’t claim until you file your 2021 tax return
- You made more in 2020 but less in 2021 and the IRS was unaware
