Geneva Foundry cleanup: 38 contaminated sites targeted for 2022

The seven-year plan to clean up contaminated properties surrounding the former site of Geneva Foundry enters its sixth year with the goal of remediating 38 more properties in 2022.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said the cleanup is pending agreements with property owners, according to Finger Lakes Times. Work is set to be done on the following streets: Exchange, Wadsworth, Middle, Genesee, Lewis, and Geneva.

The 2022 work will begin once weather is more favorable, and all work is set to be completed by the end of 2023. In total, 172 properties in the contamination zone has been cleaned up between 2017-21.

The Geneva Foundry manufactured metal products in their Jackson Street facility from 1868 to 1988. Air emissions from the furnace contained led and arsenic, which entered the soil in the surrounding area.

The cleanup is being funded and conducted by the DEC under the State Superfund Program.
