Pittsburgh bridge collapse brings attention to New York’s own crumbling infrastructure

A serious bridge collapse occurred in Pittsburgh on Friday, January 28 just ahead of President Joe Biden’s planned visit to the city to give a speech on the recently-passed $1 trillion infrastructure bill.

“We’re going to rebuild that bridge, along with thousands of other bridges in Pennsylvania, and across the country, because it’s in our interest for our own safety’s sake,” said Biden.

The incident sparked new calls to fix New York State’s own crumbling infrastructure, according to NY State of Politics. The NYS Comptroller’s office released a report on Friday that showed government spending on infrastructure declined 7% after adjusting for inflation between 2010 and 2020.

Governor Kathy Hochul is considering several billion-dollar infrastructure projects, including a revamp of the Kensington Highway in Buffalo and I-81 in Syracuse.
