Newfield man steals pickup truck in Ovid, later recovered after crash in Tioga County

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Newfield man on a warrant for grand larceny after being picked up at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

Roy Searles, 33, of Newfield was arrested for second-degree grand larceny- a felony, and arrested on additional counts of third-degree burglary, and third-degree grand larceny, as well as one more count of petit larceny.

The second-degree grand larceny charges stems from an incident on December 29, 2021 where Searles stole a Ford pickup truck from Ovid. The theft occurred during the day, according to a news release.

After a search of the area was completed the pickup truck was seen in the area of Trumbulls Corners Road where it was involved in a crash. Searles is accused of fleeing the scene with the pickup truck- and it was found later in Tioga County.

The burglary and larceny charges stem from the incident in Ovid, as well as another incident in Fayette where he broke into storage units and stole property from inside. According to deputies, over $5,000 wroth of tools were stolen from the Ovid location.

Investigators say the incidents took place between December 26 and December 28.

He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.
