Mobile sports betting wild success in New York: Will gambling play continue?

Mobile sports betting in New York has been an overwhelming success.

On Tuesday, Governor Kathy Hochul mentioned it during her State of the State Address. Johnny Avello, head of DraftKings sports book operations agrees.

Speaking recently with the Poughkeepsie Journal, he said the success of New York’s mobile sports betting, which went live a week ago was immediate.

“It’s hugely popular; I can tell by the numbers we did over the first weekend,” Avello told The Journal. “We opened up with the two NFL games that Saturday and New York was one of the top states for handle.”

Estimates indicate that the state netted somewhere around $150 million in the first week of legalized mobile sports betting in New York. While those numbers are not final- it shows the sheer volume of play operators will see.

In fact, there was so much play that all of the major operators saw technical issues in the first week. DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars all experienced some technical issues. Though most have been worked out- Caesars has still experienced ongoing issues related to operation for players.
