The sixth-ranked Hobart College hockey team scored three goals in the third period as it cruised to a 4-1 victory over Potsdam in a non-conference contest at Haldane Memorial Arena Monday. With the win, the Statesmen are now 12-3-1 overall this season.
Zach Tyson (1g, 1a) and Matthieu Wuth (2a) led the way for Hobart with two points each. In total, eight players found their way onto the scoresheet. Liam Lascelle started in goal and made 22 saves as he earned his seventh win of the season.
Ethan Clark scored for the Bears (1-13-0). Connor Green started in goal and made a season-high 42 saves in the loss.
Hobart dominated the opening 20 minutes, finishing the period with a 17-5 edge in shots on goal. The Statesmen peppered Green but could not sneak a shot across the goal line. At the 3:35 mark of the first period, Matthew Iasenza raced down the right wing, but his shot from the slot was turned aside by the goalie. In the middle of the period, Blake Coffey had a pair of shots from the blue line stopped by Green.
Hobart broke the deadlock at the 14:35 mark of the first period. Dan Sliney one-timed a shot from the faceoff circle past Green for his fifth goal of the season. Ethan Mulhearn was credited with an assist on the tally after winning a puck battle along the boards. Felix Lamoureux notched a secondary assist on the tally Less than a minute later, Lamoureux had a chance stopped by Green’s glove hand.
Just over three minutes into the third period, Iasenza gave Hobart a 2-0 lead with his fourth goal of the season. He collected a clearing pass from Matthieu Wuth, broke down the right wing, cut to the low slot and slipped a shot between the goalie’s legs. Just over one minute later, Clark cut into the Hobart lead with his first goal of the season. He banged home a rebound from the slot. Jack Loran was credited with an assist on the goal. At the 13:11 mark of the third period, Aaron Maguyon extended Hobart’s lead to 3-1 with his team-leading 12th goal of the season. He tapped home a rebound on the left goal post. Tyson and Luke Aquaro notched assists on a goal. Tyson added an empty-net goal to seal the victory. Wuth notched an assist on the goal.
Hobart finished the game with a 46-23 edge in shots on goal. Neither team found the back of the net on the power play. The Statesmen were 0-for-2 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-3 with the extra attacker.
Hobart is scheduled to return to New England Hockey Conference play this weekend, Jan. 21-22, when it takes on eighth-ranked Elmira. Friday’s game in Elmira is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s game at The Cooler is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
