Proposed NY Congressional map would combine Katko, Tenney districts

The New York Independent Redistricting Commission, the group in charge of drawing new Congressional District maps, has announced a plan that would combine the districts of John Katko and Claudia Tenney.

Syracuse.com reports the new 22nd District would extend from Ithaca, north along the I-81 corridor to Syracuse and east to Utica. The 22nd District map is one of the few the panel was able to agree on. The 10-member commission voted to send competing maps of state Assembly, state Senate and Congressional maps to the legislature. There was disagreement between the five Republican and five Democratic members of the commission on almost everything other than the 22nd District.

The consensus proposal for the new 22nd District could lead to a GOP primary between Katko and Tenney in 2022. The GOP plan for the 22nd does not include Tenney’s hometown of New Hartford. Under that proposal, New Hartford would be in the 19th District, served by Congressman Antonio Delgado.

In a statement, Tenney said the commission defied the will of the people and failed their constitutional duty to draft a single, bipartisan district map for Congress, State Senate and State Assembly.” No comment so far from Katko.
