Winter Weather Advisory active for most of Finger Lakes, Central New York: Freezing rain possible

There’s some wintry weather on the way for the Finger Lakes, Central New York, and Southern Tier.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Schuyler, Steuben, Tompkins, and Yates counties for the daytime and evening hours.

Freezing rain is possible during the afternoon and evening hours, which could mean slippery road conditions.

The Winter Weather Advisory runs until 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

Joshua Pan, a forecaster with the Storm Trackers Team, gave the following update:

“Light snow is beginning to overspread the area from southwest to northeast. Only a trace to a coating of snow is expected. This afternoon, a layer of above-freezing air aloft will cause a changeover to freezing/plain rain. Higher elevations in the southern portion of our monitoring area may see freezing rain lasting into the overnight hours. Ice totals from freezing rain of up to 0.10″ are possible. A couple of slick roads are possible during the afternoon commute—use extra caution on overpasses and back roads. Be sure to allow for a little extra time to reach your destination.”
