Two airlifted from head-on crash in Yates County

Two people were airlifted from the scene of a serious, head-on crash on Wednesday afternoon in the town of Jerusalem.

According to first responders, Jeremiah Mendez Sr., of Naples was headed north on Italy-Friend Road when he failed to maintain his lane and struck an oncoming vehicle operated by Barbara Burn, of Branchport.

Several ambulances and first responders were called to the scene.

Mendez was pinned in his vehicle and required life-saving measures to extricate him. He was then airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital with an array of injuries.

Burn was also airlifted from the scene with chest pain.

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash. Mendez was charged with failing to maintain lane, and deputies say additional charges are pending.
