New York is about to enact a ban on styrofoam containers.
The ban is set to take effect on January 1, and includes containers made from polystyrene. Most people know the containers as ‘Styrofoam’, but that’s a specific type.
Polystyrene includes all of the types. The reason for the ban, which is expected to hit the food industry hardest, is because it takes up space in landfills and cannot be recycled.
The material is regularly used in things like to-go containers at restaurants, beverage cups, and loose packaging peanuts.
Exemptions to the new rule will include raw meat, pork, seafood, and poultry. A hardship waiver is also available.
