Latest on damaging wind potential, warnings from National Weather Service

Record warmth and damaging winds. That’s the forecast for Saturday. Every county in the Finger Lakes and Central New York is in a High Wind Warning or Wind Advisory as gusts of 50-70 mph are expected.

According to the forecast team with Storm Trackers NY, here’s a look at how this wind event plays out over the next several hours:

Part I, which is ongoing at this point: “Southerly winds are starting to pickup across the area with winds 15 – 20 mph gusting to 25 mph at times. Winds primarily across the higher elevations may gust to 40-50 mph at times but shouldn’t really cause much in the way of problems with downed trees and power outages.”

Part II, which begins in the 2-3 p.m. window: “Later this afternoon, a strong cold front will move across the area. As the cold front approaches, strong to damaging winds will pickup across the areas of Eastern Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, and Northern Cayuga Counties. Winds may gust 55-60 mph at times producing some power power outages due to limbs and trees being downed. Accompanying the cold front will be a period of rain and even a rumble of thunder may be possible. Winds will continue behind the frontal passage before gradually winding down overnight.”
