NWS: Damaging winds possible as weather turns from unseasonably warm to wintry

It’s going to be a windy day and night throughout the Finger Lakes, Central New York, and Western New York. There were some scattered power outages reported in the Southern Tier during the overnight hours – the strongest winds, which prompted Wind Advisories from the National Weather Service – are expected to build as the day progresses.

What’s in the forecast?

The strongest winds will be in Western New York (around Buffalo), as well as a central pocket of the Finger Lakes. This includes Ontario, Seneca, Yates, and Cayuga counties. Wind gusts in excess of 55 mph are possible in this area.

Because of this pocket the National Weather Service has upgraded the Wind Advisory to a High Wind Warning for Ontario County.

What does that mean for you?

As usual with strong winds – high-profile vehicles will be challenged. Take it easy on area roads and watch for debris and small items that may have been picked up by the wind.
