The fifth-ranked Hobart College hockey team scored three goals in the first period and never looked back as it cruised past Castleton 6-0 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at Spartan Arena this afternoon. With their fourth straight victory, the Statesmen are now 8-1-1 overall record and 4-0-1 in conference play.
Four Statesmen had multi-point games in the victory. Jonah Alexander scored twice to lead the way for Hobart. Liam Lascelle started and played all 60 minutes in goal making 19 saves as he earned his first shutout of the season.
Dominic Rodrigue played all 60 minutes in goal for Castleton (3-8-1, 0-4-1). He made 40 saves.
Alexander opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 6:48 mark of the first period. His second goal of the season was assisted by Cooper Swift. Four minutes later, Aaron Maguyon blasted a shot from the right faceoff circle into the back of the net. His ninth goal of the season was assisted by Zach Tyson and Austin Mourar. PA Martineau gave the Statesmen a 3-0 lead at the 18:56 mark of the first period. Chase Bell was credited with an assist on Martineau’s fourth goal of the season.
The Statesmen continued to apply the pressure in the second period, outshooting the Spartans 14-4. At the 7:48 mark of the period, Alexander banged home a loose puck for his third goal of the season. Ethan Mulhearn notched an assist on the power-play goal. Swift also hit a goal post in the period.
The Statesmen put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the final five minutes of regulation. Matthew Iasenza wristed a shot from the slot past Rodrigue for his third goal of the season. The shorthanded goal was an unassisted tally. Just over a minute later. Zach Tyson cleaned up a loose puck in front of the cage to conclude the scoring. Maguyon and Swift were awarded assists on the goal.
Hobart finished the game with a 46-19 advantage in shots on goal. The Statesmen were 2-for-6 on the power play and Castleton was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
Hobart will continue its five-game road trip next Saturday, Dec. 11, when takes on No. 10 Trinity. Faceoff in Hartford, Connecticut, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
