Long Island Congressman Suozzi enters Democratic race for Governor

Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi is joining the crowded field for New York Governor.

The Long Island Representative held a virtual news conference Monday morning to announce his entry into the race. Suozzi told reporters he had wanted to enter the race for months, but wanted to wait until Congress raised the amount taxpayers can deduct in state and local taxes on their federal returns. Suozzi plans to make the cap a central issue of his campaign.

Suozzi’s Democratic opponents include Governor Kathy Hochul, state Attorney General Letitia James and New York City public advocate Jumaane Williams. New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio is also said to be considering a run.

The race to fill Suozzi’s 3rd Congressional District seat is expected to be competitive, with many political experts expecting a turn to the right during the 2022 mid-term elections. The 3rd District covers parts of Long Island and Queens.
