Police say an armed man was taken into custody after an extended standoff with police at a commercial business in Ithaca.
The Ithaca Police Department reports that on Sunday around 10:19 p.m. officers were dispatched to a building alarm at a commercial business on Cherry Street.
Initial responding officers identified a male inside the business. The individual was confrontational with officers and was armed with a. Knife.
Police say they were able to communicate with the suspect, but the person remained confrontational and refused to comply with officers directives to drop the knife and exit the structure.
Additional resources were requested from nearby law enforcement agencies to deescalate the situation. However, the suspect attempted to walk away from the building while still displaying the knife.
Officers deployed a less-lethal impact munition which successfully caused the person to drop the knife.
The suspect, later identified as Richard Knapp, 34, of Ithaca was charged with menacing a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon – both as felonies.
Knapp was arraigned in city court and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail without bail. Police say additional charges are pending.
