Deputies say one person is in custody after a shoplifting incident at Eastview Mall on Saturday led to a multi-vehicle crash on State Route 96.
It all happened in Victor during the late-afternoon hours, when Darwin Mitchell, 51, was observed concealing a large quantity of merchandise in a bag – passing all points of sale. According to investigators, the merchandise was worth over $5,500.
That’s when deputies say Mitchell fled the scene in a vehicle with Pennsylvania plates, causing a crash at the intersection of Route 96 and Commons Blvd.
The crash occurred when Mitchell failed to stop at a red light. Three vehicles were involved in the collision.
All occupants of Mitchell’s vehicle fled. Deputies identified Mitchell as the driver, and said in a press release that he was taken into custody approximately 1-mile away.
A news release from the sheriff’s office did not specify how many other occupants there were in the Mitchell vehicle.
Deputies did note that Mitchell had been banned from Eastview Mall in August, which resulted in a felony burglary and misdemeanor obstruction charge.
One deputy had to be treated at Thompson Hospital due to minor injuries sustained in the incident.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office said they were assisted by New York State Police, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Fishers Fire Department, and Victor Farmington Ambulance.
The investigation remains active.
