Inmate found unresponsive in Ontario County Jail cell, died hours later at Thompson Hospital

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate at the Ontario County Jail has died.

On Thursday around 4:45 a.m. a male was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell at the jail. Corrections staff initiated life saving measures until Canandaigua Ambulance personnel arrived and took over care.

The sheriff’s office reports that the man was transported to Thompson Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Around 6:30 p.m. at Thompson Hospital the inmate died. The individual, who was not identified by the sheriff’s office, was transported to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine cause of death.

The incarcerated person was the sole occupant of the cell where found. The death remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said, who indicated in a press release that the New York State Attorney General’s Office is lead agency.

The sheriff’s office is cooperating with the investigation.
