Driver from Ithaca traveled wrong way down Rt. 17 for miles before being stopped

New York State Police say an 86-year-old Ithaca man stopped going the wrong way around 3 a.m. on State Route 17 suffers from dementia.

State police coordinated a road closure as the driver, who was not identified, traveled the wrong way for more than 18 miles.




The man was reported missing the night before by his wife. He was transported to the Garnet Health Medical Center for a physical and mental evaluation.

There were no injuries in the incident, according to troopers.
