Governor Kathy Hochul met with advocates that had family members die in nursing homes and she apologized to them.
Hochul spoke out on why she apologized, and said that people deserve to know their government listens and cares about them.
Some of her proposal considerations for families include a $4 billion compensation fund that would go toward relatives who had a loved one die of COVID-19 in a nursing home.
Families would receive $250,000 and spouses or dependents would receive $100,000.
The money would come from the State Treasury, and work similarly to the model used to compensate victims impacted by September 11.
