Running back Rayshawn Boswell produced a game-high 188 yards off offense and scored two touchdowns, but No. 17 Ithaca topped No. 21 Hobart 28-21 this afternoon. The Bombers took the lead midway through the fourth quarter and made two red zone defensive stands to hold off the Statesmen.
Boswell caught a game-high six passes for a game-high 92 yards, tying the game at 14 on an 11-yard pass from quarterback David Krewson. Boswell also had 12 carries for a game-high 96 yards, including a 70-yard TD run that put Hobart in front 21-14 with about five minutes to go in the third quarter. Krewson was 15-of-29 passing for 223 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Ithaca (4-0, 1-0) answered Boswell’s 70-run up the left sideline with a five-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. The Bombers had back-to-back 22-yard gains to set up Jalen Hines’ 6-yard TD run. Hines finished the day with 21 carries for 89 yards.
Ithaca nearly reclaimed the lead two minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Bombers’ 37-yard field goal attempt was no good. Hobart wasn’t able to score on its next possession and punted back to the home team. This time Ithaca cashed in and quickly. Three straight completions by quarterback A.J. Wingfield put the final touchdown on the board. He found Andrew Vito for 30 yards on the scoring play for a 28-21 lead with 8:54 left to play. Wingfield was 17-of-21 passing for 221 yards and a TD. He also rushed six times for 11 yards and a touchdown.
Hobart marched 51 yards in nine plays, setting up a second-and-nine from the Ithaca 14. Krewson’s passes on each of the next three plays fell incomplete turning the ball over on downs with 2:11 left.
Facing third and one, Ithaca gave the ball to Hines, but linebacker Emmett Forde stopped him for no gain. The Bombers punted, leaving the Statesmen one minute to go 56 yards.
Krewson started the drive with a 13-yard completion to Alex LaBella (5 rec, 69 yds) and three plays later connected with Chris Bartosic for 27 yards to set Hobart up at the Ithaca 16. After spiking the ball to stop the clock on first down, Krewson’s second down pass went just out of the reach of Michael Battis in the back, right corner of the end zone. On third down, Krewson rolled right and looked to throw back to his left, but lost his grasp on the ball. He was able to recover the fumble and scrambled for a 1-yard gain, but he was tackled inbounds and time ran out.
After a scoreless first quarter, Ithaca reached the end zone three plays into the second quarter on a 27-yard run by Wingfield. The Bombers’ Anthony Robinson intercepted Krewson on the ensuing drive and returned it 29 yards to the Hobart 26. Four plays later, Jalen Leonard-Osbourne scored on an 8-yard run for a 14-0 lead.
Hobart got on the board just before halftime with a nine-play, 81-yard scoring drive. Krewson hit LaBella for 38 yards on the first play for the biggest gain of the drive. Running back Tim Denham Jr. capped off the march with a 6-yard run.
Forde shared game-high honors with nine tackles. Ithaca’s Isaac Hadac and Miles Haynes also had nine stops.
Hobart will be off next weekend, returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when the Statesmen host RPI on Boswell Field.
