Advocates are asking the Governor Kathy Hochul sign two measures that would address issues within the juvenile justice court system in the state of New York.
One bill would make it so mechanical restraints cannot be used on kids appearing in family court, unless a judge deems it necessary for different reasons.
Another is to change laws surrounding warrants for juveniles in family court. This would allow a juvenile to be seen by the most accessible magistrate when family court is not in session.
The bills are on Hochul’s desk awaiting her signature.
