Horse racing is an economic driver in upstate New York with a coalition forming to promote the industry

A new coalition called We Are NY Horse Racing has been created to help promote the horse racing industry in New York.

One of the things the group points out is that the sport has a $3 billion dollar impact on the economy of the state, carries 19,000 jobs, and fills a large role by being the second largest agribusiness.

While this coalition grows, so do the number of people protesting for animal rights and the poor treatment of horses.

One of the protests happened in Saratoga Springs over the summer.

Due to the pandemic keeping fans away in 2020, the 2021 meet saw over 26,000 people in attendance.

The industry is a huge part of the tourism industry in New York, with 11 tracks throughout the state which draw thousands in to restaurants and bars.

Todd Shimkus, the president of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, explained that the Saratoga Race Course is one of the biggest economic engines for upstate New York.

The coalition plans to spend time holding events where they can educate people and promote the horse racing industry.

The coalition is made up of the New York Racing Association, New York State Laborer’s Organizing Fund, the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, the New York Farm Bureau, DZ Restaurants and Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau & Suffolk Counties, AFL-CIO, and others.
