September is Suicide Awareness month and physicians take their own lives at twice the rate of the general population

Dr. Brain Cassetta, internal medicine at Guthrie Hospital, wants to bring awareness to the importance of suicide among healthcare professionals.

Cassetta explained that one doctor a day dies by suicide in the U.S.

He says much of it can be tied back to mental health and the immense stress that comes with being a physician.

One example is a woman named Dr. Lorna Breen who came down with COVID. After beating it, she returned to work and became depressed, eventually taking her own life.

Cassetta said he worries about the mental health of physicians due to the nature of the pandemic and how doctors have never really seen anything like this before.

Administration is working to check in with doctors and staff to make sure their mental health is being taken care of.
