Patients in need of elective surgeries grow anxious as hospitals begin preparing for staff shortages

After a judge temporarily blocked the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for healthcare workers, healthcare systems are thinking of ways to handle the staffing crisis.

UR Medicine is worried employees will quit instead of get vaccinated and with the mandate going into effect in two weeks, patients are nervous.

After one patient was attacked by a dog, it was determined she would need reconstructive surgery on her face and mouth.

She spent three days in the hospital and the surgery is scheduled for October, but that may not be happening, adding to the stress of the situation.

After the state’s mandate was temporarily blocked, the state was given 8 days to respond, and healthcare workers who do not want the vaccine hope they will adjust the mandate to be less restricting.
