FTC warns that a new scam involving extortion and LGBTQ dating apps is becoming more common

The FTC has issued a warning about a new scam that targets users of LGBTQ dating apps.

The scammer will pose as a potential partner on apps like Grindr or Feeld and send explicit photos asking for some in return.

The victim is then blackmailed and the scammer threatens to show family, friends and employers.

Tips to avoid this include knowing who you’re talking to before sending anything like that, and do a reverse image search.

Do not share personal information.

Do not pay an extortionist- not only are they scamming, but they may not even hold up their end of the deal with not releasing the photos.

The crime should be reported to the Internet Crime Complaint Center and at FTC.
