Police in Elmira investigated a pipe bomb explosion that happened on Herrick Street in the city on Wednesday.
Multiple units arrived on the scene quickly to prevent further damage, and officials said after that it could have been much worse.
“By talking with the investigators and the technicians, [if the other devices detonated] it definitely would have been a catastrophic loss in regards to that residence. Shrapnel and debris would have flown through the neighborhood… It could have been much worse,” Chief Alvernaz told WETM-TV.
One person was taken into custody from a house at the site of the explosion. It’s unclear if that arrest was connected to the pipe bomb explosion.
No injuries were reported in the incident. It’s not believed to be a random act, according to police, who say that the incident was targeted.
Similar incidents have been reported throughout the area, but at this point, police cannot say if they are all connected.
Anyone with information that could help with the investigation is asked to call 607-737-5626.
