Governor Kathy Hochul touched on keeping students safe in her inaugural address this week. One of the ways she suggested this was to mandate teachers to get vaccines with the option of testing out weekly.
While Hochul may want this, the only way to achieve it is to have cooperation on all levels of government.
Hochul admitted she does not have the power to make an executive decision to require vaccines, but plans to meet with partners in the education community, school boards, and superintendents to make it happen.
The State Legislature is what would make this happen, and they are not in session.
While it cannot be mandated right now, districts are urging teachers to get the vaccines. Most teachers have been happy to oblige.
