Kathy Hochul’s selection of Senator Brian Benjamin gained praise from many advocates that back Benjamin’s efforts toward criminal just law reform, but Republicans feel the selection is bolstering an extremely liberal Democratic Party for the state of New York.
Benjamin has sponsored various criminal justice laws including making parole easier for older incarcerated individuals, speeding up the parole process, and getting records sealed or expunged.
Many changes have already been made that helped lower the number of people in prison and diminish the use of solitary confinement.
Republicans want these measures to be lesser or repealed.
Conservative Party Chairman Gerry Kassar believes Hochul’s selection of Benjamin as Lt. Gov. is a sign the the Democratic base is shifting further to the left.
